3 Helpful Hints to "Arrive" at Your Goals

arrive

"If I were only skinny/bigger/successful/rich, I'd be happier/loved/fulfilled."

How many times have you said this to yourself? Honestly. All of us. Every single one of us has said this at one time or another.Let's lay down some truth here.Often, when blogs and magazines write success stories, they focus on all the great things about the person's new life. They don't print all the fears and doubts that are going on in that person's head.

"What if I can't keep this up?"

"If I could only lose a little more weight, I'd be perfect."

"They're going to find out I'm a phonie soon, then it will all be over."

When you "arrive," you realize:You never actually "arrive."Most people who aim purely for surface goals will arrive and find that they're still lacking. You can reach your goal weight, your goal job, your goal income and you still won't feel satisfied. That's where I'd like to introduce a new perspective into the mix:Rather than focusing on arriving at a surface goal, deepen your goals to root them in your core. One of the first exercises I have people do as a client is to develop Root Goals. These are the ones that invoke lasting motivation and drive, rather than focusing on that outer arrival. Here are 3 helpful hints that will prepare you for finding your Root Goals, so that you can truly arrive in the life you know you deserve.

1. You arrived years ago

Before we get anything started, let's get one thing straight. You have arrived. The millisecond your heart started beating, you became worthy of love and happiness. [click to tweet]To "arrive" is to simply become aware of the fact that everything that makes you lovable and worthy is already within you.You arrived years ago. Any goals you set for yourself should be rooted in this knowledge.

2. Sit and revel in what you have achieved

Stop focusing on all your goals for a second, and take a second to just sit and revel in everything you've done thus far.

Have you started eating healthier? That is so awesome. Revel in that.

Have you started a new workout program? You rock, dude. Revel in it.

Are you starting to think more positively when stressors come up? That is effing amazing, my friend. Revel in how this feels.

The more aware you are of the change you're creating in your life, the deeper that belief that you can change roots itself within you. Every so often, take a break from moving forward, and take the time to congratulate yourself on being a rockstar to your core.

3. Shift your goals deeper

Find your deep-rooted "why" for motivation that lasts. Take your surface goals and deepen them into root goals.Root goals are the "why"s behind your surface goals. For instance, if you want to lose weight, it may be because you're unhappy with how you look. Why? Why do you want to change the way you look?

Is it because you've been teased and you want to feel more confident?

Is it because you can't keep up with your kids?

Is it because you want to prove wrong all the people that told you you couldn't?

Continue asking why until the answer strikes an emotional chord in you. That's when you've found your deep "why."Please keep in mind that root goals are extremely personal and do not ever need to be shared with anyone. When you go after what you want with this deep "why" motivating you, your drive and resolve strengthen, and your priorities become more clear.Wondering how to create those root goals?
