Stop Dwelling and Glow

In the last week, I've heard from two people that I'm always "glowing."They both said it in a puzzled, apprehensive way, as if it might offend me.  When I reacted positively, it seemed to confuse them even more. What they don't know is what you all know: my struggle to find happiness has been a long one.Given my history, this compliment is a definite victory! After all my self-work, I've found a way to genuinely shift my focus to the positive rather than dwell in the negative as was my habit in the past.  The "glow" comes from the positive way that I now view the world- the energy radiates!  At least, this is the way I feel when I'm around other people that glow: they're all optimists. Most people with depression find themselves in the scenario I was in- trapped by their negative thoughts and confused as to how to shift to positive thinking.  Even those that aren't depressed can have a difficult time with this shift. What does it take to let go of your inner Debbie Downer, and start glowing from the inside?

THE CHOICE.

It had to be a conscious choice on my part to shift my focus from the areas that dragged me down, to the ones that produced effortless energy and inspiration. You must deliberately catch yourself in the act of pessimism, and make the choice in that moment to refocus on a positive thought instead. For instance, say you were getting ready for work and it's just one of those days that you don't want to go.  You catch yourself thinking, Gaaaaawd I really don't want to go to work today.STOP.You've just caught yourself in the act.  You are aware of it.  Now time for a little magic.TAKE A DEEP BREATH.Focus on why you go to work in the first place.  Does it provide the money to pay for a roof over your head?  Do you have friends there that you wouldn't see otherwise?  Do you feel accomplished after finishing a day's work?Ruminate on all the benefits that your job provides, then consciously focus on them.

I am so thankful for this job that allows me to live in this house that protects my family.

I can't wait to see Erica so I can tell her about what I did this weekend.

If I didn't have a job, I would be sitting at home, bored, watching TV all day.  At least at work I'm productive!

After a few weeks repeating this exercise, your mind will automatically reroute to the positive thought.

PRACTICE.

As with all things worthwhile, this exercise takes practice to become a habit.  Stick with it and you can achieve the mindset you want.

It is possible.
