Ever tried to talk yourself out of a feeling?

…only to find that it kept coming back up over and over again?

Maybe you journaled, met with a talk therapist or just tried to think more “positively.” All that can work to a point, but when the stress/emotions keep coming back, chances are you might need the body’s help in integrating them.

Somatics is a bottom-up approach to healing that focuses on your body’s needs, messages and stored patterns.

Since thoughts are what the brain can most readily understand, we often think we can think them away or resolve them on a logical level, but the body doesn’t work that way. Rather than talking about feelings, Somatics encourages us get in touch with the bodily experience of emotion and stress.

The body is what FEELS those emotions and stress. When they’re left unfelt and unintegrated, the body holds onto them and sends us recurring messages that they’re there waiting for us to address (stress, emotion, fear, etc.).

The brain can’t do the healing work all by itself; it needs the body and all its intelligence and wisdom to move it through. Somatics is a process of doing just that.

So what do you do in a session?

Each Somatics session is tailored to the client and their needs in that moment.

I’m certified in Somatic Stress Release™, Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy and Integrative Somatic Parts Work. I pull the pieces that work for the client on that particular day!

For one person that might mean movement, for another it might mean stillness and talking to their inner child. Whatever it is we always start by cultivating a sense of safety and autonomy, then meet you where you are and with what you’re feeling ready for, and end by making sure you’re back to a regulated state.

Amy + Somatics: a love story

I like to describe myself as a “mental health cocktail” because I’ve been diagnosed with clinical depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma and eating disorders. It wasn’t until my last therapist who was adept at Somatics that I really started learning how to process the emotions within me.

When I got out of my head and into my body, I was able to meet the emotions without labeling them. I learned how to BE WITH my feelings instead of thinking AT them. And when I felt the physical sensations of the feelings, I no longer spiraled around certain thoughts, stories or beliefs; I was able to address them at the root within my body.

Somatics taught me how to truly be there for myself as a whole. It was so life-changing that I dove into my own trainings within my scope of practice as a health coach. I’m a certified Somatic Stress Release™ practitioner and have certificates in Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy and Integrative Somatic Parts Work through The Embody Lab.

My values

Besides Somatics, I’m a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and a non-diet health + movement coach. I believe strongly in body liberation, intersectional feminism and social justice, and apply these beliefs in my work as much as possible. As a mixed race woman (Chinese and Western European), inclusivity is of the utmost importance to me. I never really felt like I belonged in many places so now I seek to create a space in my practice where ALL races, gender identities, bodies and sexual orientations belong.

And a few important things…

Before deciding if you’d like to try somatics with me, please know that while I’m a certified Somatic Stress Release™ Practitioner and I hold certificates in Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy and Integrative Somatic Parts Work, I am not a mental health professional.

Where therapists go after the trauma directly, I seek to address the current effects you experience from trauma and stress. I help you with the current feels and patterns; therapists help you process the event. If you’re struggling with a particular trauma or event and are seeking to resolve that, I recommend finding a licensed somatic therapist instead.

Somatics Sessions are not a substitute for mental health treatment. I do not work directly on traumatic events as I am not a licensed mental health professional.
